Tamil Nadu 200 Free Electricity Units in 2026: Who Qualifies?

From 10 May 2026, eligible Tamil Nadu domestic consumers using no more than 500 units over a two-month billing cycle can receive 200 units of free electricity. Domestic households consuming more than 500 units over two months continue to receive the older 100-unit benefit under the existing structure. The change was announced through Tamil Nadu Energy Department G.O.(Ms) No. 50, dated 10 May 2026.

This is a bi-monthly benefit, not a monthly allowance of 200 units. The eligibility threshold is based on total consumption for the billing period and should not be confused with the number of units remaining after a subsidy. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) subsequently approved provisional funding for the additional subsidy through March 2027. Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) and a report on the TNERC provisional subsidy order explain the revised rules.

Who Gets 200 Free Units?

The enhanced benefit applies to eligible domestic connections with total consumption of 500 units or less in the bi-monthly period. Customers using more than 500 units are not put into the 200-unit subsidy tier simply because they would otherwise have 300 billable units. Their earlier 100-unit benefit continues, subject to the official tariff and eligibility rules.

Bi-monthly domestic use Free-unit benefit Basic explanation
0–200 units Up to 200 units The covered domestic energy units may be free under the scheme
201–500 units First 200 units Remaining units are billed under the applicable rates
Above 500 units Existing first 100 units The 200-unit benefit is not available above the threshold

The table explains free-unit eligibility only. It is not a full invoice or a replacement for the official slab tariff. Other charges, settlement rules and exemptions may vary by connection type.

Illustrative Examples

Example: 180 units in two months

A qualifying household remains within the new 200-unit free allowance, so its eligible domestic energy-unit component may be zero. Check the bill for any other applicable amounts.

Example: 350 units in two months

The account qualifies for 200 free units. The other 150 units are not automatically charged at one flat rate: the utility applies its approved tariff and subsidy rules. The correct rupee bill requires the current official consumer-payable slabs.

Example: 500 versus 501 units

At 500 units, an otherwise eligible domestic consumer can qualify for 200 free units. At 501 units, the household moves outside that benefit and remains under the older 100-free-unit framework. Even one extra unit can change subsidy eligibility, but the exact rupee difference depends on the full billing schedule.

What About the Older 100-Free-Unit Scheme?

It was not universally abolished. For eligible domestic use above 500 units bi-monthly, the earlier structure continues, including the initial 100-unit free benefit. This is why articles or calculators that simply say all Tamil Nadu users get 100 free units are incomplete for periods after 10 May 2026.

Is This for Residential, Commercial and Agricultural Consumers?

The announced 200-unit scheme specifically concerns eligible domestic consumers. Shops, industries and other supply categories have separate rules. Do not apply a household subsidy to a commercial connection. Solar net-metered users should check how the utility establishes qualifying billed consumption and subsidy eligibility under their specific settlement arrangements.

Does the Scheme Mean Free Electricity Every Month?

No. Tamil Nadu residential billing commonly follows a two-month meter-reading cycle. A household consuming 200 units over two months is not the same as one consuming 200 units each month. Examine the start and end meter readings and the number of billed days before assessing eligibility.

Where Should I Verify the Rate Slabs?

For approved rates, subsidies and effective dates, consult the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission and the utility’s published notices. A subsidy order and an approved base-rate schedule are distinct documents: a published regulator tariff may show a higher pre-subsidy charge than the amount a qualified household pays.

Also review our tariff sources and calculation methodology. The current TANGEDCO calculator and Tamil Nadu calculator contain earlier assumptions and are under review. Do not rely on those tools for a post-10 May 2026 bill without checking the actual subsidy and latest official tariff.

How to Check Whether Your Subsidy Was Applied

  1. Confirm the connection is registered under an eligible domestic category.
  2. Read the gross bi-monthly units from your actual electricity bill.
  3. Check whether the billing period is covered by the change effective 10 May 2026.
  4. Find the government subsidy or free-units section and see whether it reflects the correct eligibility band.
  5. If the credit looks wrong, contact your official TNPDCL service office with the account number and bill details.

Never share your electricity portal password or OTP with an unofficial calculator or third party. Make payments and correction requests using your provider’s authenticated channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did the 200-unit subsidy start?

The government order took effect on 10 May 2026.

Is the allowance 200 units per month?

No. It is up to 200 units per two-month domestic billing period for qualifying consumers.

What happens when consumption reaches exactly 500 units?

Qualifying consumers at 500 units remain within the enhanced benefit. Consumption above 500 units is outside that 200-unit band.

Do users above 500 units still get 100 free units?

Yes, the previous domestic structure, including 100 free units, continues for eligible users above the threshold.

Does every household pay ₹0 until 200 units?

The eligible energy-use component may be free, but review the official bill for other applicable items and any special connection conditions.

Can commercial accounts claim the new 200-unit benefit?

No. This particular announcement targets eligible domestic users.

How should rooftop solar customers check eligibility?

Check their TNPDCL billing and settlement rules rather than assuming exported power directly changes the subsidy threshold.

What if my 2026 electricity bill still shows the old scheme?

Check the billing period, total units, eligibility and tariff code. Contact the official utility if a bill issued for the applicable period appears inconsistent with the scheme.
